Are squirrels cyber terrorists?

Updated: Dec 12, 2021

Squirrels are probably not actually cyber terrorists, but they are a real and major threat to power grids, the internet, and communication systems. The American Public Power Association maintains a data tracker appropriately called “The Squirrel Index” which follows trends in squirrel-caused electrical outages. The association reported 3,456 power outages, which cut off power to more than 193,873 customers in one year. At Barksdale Air Force Base, nesting squirrels and their habitual chewing, crippled facility fire alarm taking offline this critical life, health and safety warning system. Also at Barksdale, severed fiber optic cables due to squirrels chewing, interfered with the bases hospital equipment. And not to be outdone, not once, but twice squirrels took the NASDAQ stock market down in1987 and again in 1994. I'll leave you with this quote from Former Deputy Director, National Security Agency John C. Inglis regarding squirrels: "I don't think paralysis [of the electrical grid] is more likely by cyberattack than by natural disaster. And frankly the number-one threat experienced to date by the US electrical grid is squirrels." - , Former Deputy Director, National Security Agency

Solocal Wildlife Removal can safely and effectively remove or evict squirrels in accordance with NC Wildlife regulations and keep them from getting back in.
