Do squirrels really start fires?

Updated: Dec 12, 2021

I'm sure most of us have seen the Geico commercial "It's Personal This Time Squirrels". Geico usually has a comical and memorable commercials. Is it insensitive foreshadowing for an insurance company to make a funny commercial about squirrels in the attic or is there any real risk to squirrels in your attic causing fires? The answer is yes it does happen. How often does this occur? High estimates place the numbers at 30-40k annually in the US, while the low end estimates a few thousand a year. A article sited a study on a naval base noted that home inspectors estimate 20% of house fires are caused by squirrels. Some of these numbers seem high. Regardless of documentation of exact numbers, we do know that squirrels chewing on electrical wires can result in arcs and fires. A house fire caused by a squirrel is probably the worst case scenario of having these unwelcome guests living in your attic, but it happens. Admittedly this scenario is not going to happen to every home with a squirrel dwelling in the attic, however, it is an excellent reason to seek a wildlife animal removal service for squirrel removal, eviction and sealing up the entries.

Solocal Wildlife Removal can safely and effectively remove or evict squirrels in accordance with NC Wildlife regulations and keep them from getting back in.
